Michael P. Culmo Presents Best Practices for Precast Concrete Bridge Construction

For over 28 years, CME’s CTO, Michael P. Culmo, has been an active member of the Northeast Bridge Technical Committee, a regional subgroup of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute.

The committee consists of DOT engineers, consultants, and fabricators whose objective is to standardize precast concrete bridge products across the region and develop new precast technologies. The committee has been at the forefront of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods and innovations since 2004. Based on recurring problems with typical projects, members identified a need for training so that designers could better understand precast concrete bridge technologies.  Mr. Culmo worked on a small sub-committee to develop training modules for this effort where they focused on the following items:

  • Deck Bulb Tee Girders
  • Northeast Extreme Tees
  • Full-Depth Deck Panels
  • Prestressed Beam Reinforcement
  • Accelerated Bridge Construction
  • Tolerances
  • Resolution of Non-conformances

Mr. Culmo is scheduled to lecture on these topics at 6 regional half-day workshops this spring in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, and Vermont. A workshop in Rhode Island is planned for this Fall. To learn more about Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), please contact Mr. Culmo at info@cmeengineering.com.
